Jill is joined by founders of the extremely popular online wellness publication Well+Good for this week’s special. Alexia Brue and Melisse Gelula will take us through the 2017 edition of their annual “wellness trends” feature, where they predict what is going to be big in the world of health, fitness and lifestyle in the coming year. Well+Good’s predictions are always on point and on this week’s show, Alexia, Melisse and Jill cover the first five of fifteen.
When Alexia Brue and Melisse Gelula decided to leave there job and start their own online wellness publication SoulCycle was only just becoming a thing a the idea of selling bone broth on the street was not only unheard of but frowned upon. Alexia and Melisse started Well+Good from scratch in an apartment room in New York. Since then, the wellness scene has blown up and so has their publication. Fast forward to today and Well+Good employs over twenty five staff members, has almost 300k followers on Instagram , over 300k likes on Facebook and has launched a Los Angelis edition.
Alexia and Melisse come on the show this week to give us the first five of the health and wellness trends we’ll all be talking about in the year ahead. They release their predictions annually and they’re consistently accurate without fail. So, without further ado here are the first five wellness trends that are covered on this weeks show:
1. RECOVERY NOW RULES FOR FITNESS FANATICS
As high intensity workouts continue their rise in popularity there has been a general tendency to forgo the critical act of recovery post-workout. Alexia, Melisse and Jill talk about how people are going to shift their attention to recovery in 2017 as well as the people and technology that are going to help them do it.
2. NEXT-GEN WELLNESS RETREATS
Many of us have been on retreats and some of us have probably also been on fitness/wellness retreats. What the girls are talking about on this week’s show are curated experiences developed by leading wellness insiders and top tier fitness instructors. Alexia points out that these “next-gen retreats” are getting more sophisticated as the industry grows.
3. EVERYONE’S DITCHING THEIR MAKEUP FOR THE NATURAL LOOK
In the make up world, it’s sometimes hard to keep up with what’s new in the game. If you have access to any social media platform, however, this one is difficult to have missed. Celebs like Alicia Keys, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kim Kardashian have all contributed to the no makeup self-love movement and the Instagram hashtag #nomakeup comes up with over 12 million results.
4. HYPER-FUNCTIONAL BEVERAGES, YOUR NEW HEALTH TONIC
Remember when vitamin waters were a big thing? (thanks 50 cent) Turns out they were full of sugar and really quite bad for you. The new hyper-functional beverages aren’t a one-stop shop quick fix for all your ailments. They’re different products made by different companies who want to help you get over fatigue, distraction, insomnia and a number of pesky problems to which we do not raise a glass.
5. THE SOCIAL SCENE IS SOBERING UP
As Jill put it on this week’s show “here’s one I never thought I’d be saying about New Yorkers”. According to Alexia and Melisse, it’s becoming increasingly cool to abstain from taking shots when you go out and you won’t be called out for having a seltzer instead. Yes we can all finally breathe a huge sigh of relief and actually start enjoying our nights out.
